The remarkable story of a girl from male-dominated society: Geeta Phogat

 Geeta Phogat, a well-known or versed name in the field of wrestling. She is the first Indian female wrestler to qualify for the Olympic summer games and to win Gold medal in 2010 Commonwealth games, wrestling (freestyle).


2010 Commonwealth Games

15 December 1988 was the day when pride of our India born and named as Geeta Phogat. she born in a Jaat family to father Mahavir Singh Phogat and mother Daya Kaur in balali village in Charkhi Dadri district of Haryana. Geeta's sister Babita Kumari and cousin Vinesh Phogat are also gold medalist in Commonwealth games. Her younger sister Ritu Phogat is also an international wrestler and her youngest sister Sangeeta Phogat is also a wrestler.

She grew up in a male dominated society and still then she makes her career in a male dominated game i.e. Wrestling. Mahavir Singh Phogat, a former wrestling wanted her child to fulfill his dream of winning Gold medal for India. so, he started training her first child, Geeta Phogat for wrestling.

After training from her father, she started participating in district and state wrestling competitions.

She won her first Gold medal at the Commonwealth wrestling championship held in Jalandhar, Punjab in December 2009.

2010 was the year when Geeta came into headlines when she won India's first ever gold medal in 55kg's women's wrestling at Commonwealth games held in New Delhi. In this match, she beated Emily Bensted from Australia.

Geeta won another gold medal at Commonwealth wrestling championship in Melbourne in 2011. she also won a gold medal in  the wrestling FILA Asian Olympic qualification tournament at Astana, Kazakhstan in April 2012 and became the first Indian woman in wrestling to qualify for Olympic summer games. In 2012, she also won bronze medal in World wrestling championship.

At Commonwealth wrestling championship of 2013, held in Johannesburg, South Africa. Geeta won silver medal in 59kg wrestling.

Geeta won bronze medal in the freestyle wrestling 58kg category at the Asian wrestling championship in 2015.

Geeta Phogat made her comeback in 2017 Commonwealth wrestling championship which were  held in Johannesburg, South Africa , where she won gold medal for the country.

Only female to make a six time winning record: MC Mary Kom

  Mangte Chungeijang Mary Kom, who is populalry known as Mary Kom  is the only Indian female boxer to have qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics. She was born in an ordinary family in Kangathei village, Moirang lamkhai in Churachandpur district, Manipur on 24 November 1982.
